Hi! My name is Ángela, and from a very young age I have been deeply curious about how all forms of life work. This fascination led me to appreciate the diversity of shapes and colors found in nature, which almost instinctively pushed me to start drawing them.

For this reason, I always knew I wanted to study Biology, and I graduated from the University of Seville in 2019. I later specialized in Marine Ecology at the University of the Balearic Islands in 2021, where I discovered my passion for marine research.

This path led me to begin a PhD in Marine Management and Conservation at the Andalusian Institute of Marine Sciences (ICMAN–CSIC) in 2023, after two years working as a research technician at the University of Cádiz.

During this time, I became aware of the gap between scientific institutions and society, which sparked my vocation for science communication, and what better tool than illustration to bring this knowledge closer to people?

Ángela Rodríguez-Ruiz

Five years ago, I began working as a scientific illustrator, collaborating with researchers from universities and CSIC institutes on a wide range of projects, including figures for scientific articles, logos for research projects, thesis and book covers, educational outreach materials, and infographics.

I have also participated in international conferences such as the International Symposium on Marine Sciences (ISMS, 2022) and science outreach events like the Feria del Mar in Cádiz (2022) or Researchers' Night (2023), where I presented the role of scientific illustration in marine sciences.

Since 2023, I have been teaching in the Master’s Degree in Scientific Illustration and Visual Communication Direction developed by Microbacterium.

Alongside other professional scientific illustrators, I teach the course Ichthyological and Marine Invertebrate Illustration. The subject is structured into two thematic blocks: students receive 8 hours of scientific theory classes covering the main groups of marine fauna, combined with practical sessions focused on illustrating each group and addressing their specific challenges, as well as additional independent work.

After three editions of the master, students have consistently developed strong technical and observational skills, resulting in high-quality, professional-level illustrations. More info in the link bellow:

One of the projects I am most proud of is the creation of the scientific illustration workshop DIBUJO CON-CIENCIA, aimed at students aged 4 to 18.

Through this workshop, illustration is introduced as a tool for mindful observation, research, and learning, while fostering knowledge of marine biodiversity.

The workshop has been held in several schools and educational centers in the province, including CEIP Santo Domingo (El Puerto de Santa María), Fundación Centro Tierra de Todos (Cádiz), and CEIP Marqués de Santa Cruz (El Puerto de Santa María), among others.
